Hammer Coral, Euphyllia ancora, is often referred to by its scientific name, Euphyllia. It is unique because of the hammer-like shape of its tentacle tips. Actinic lighting will help the feature for which it is commonly named, the hammer-shaped tips, glow with a fluorescent yellow or green. Its tentacles can extend to a distance approximately equal to the diameter of the coral's main body. Because of this, it must be placed a safe distance from other corals. Requiring a low to medium water flow, it does best resting in the substrate of the home aquarium. Unlike many other members of Large Polyp Stony Coral family, the Hammer Coral does best in lower light levels. Maintaining a proper calcium level is also an important key to successful development. It will benefit from occasional target feedings of plankton or brine shrimp, but this is not an absolute necessity if fish are present in the aquarium.
