Green Star Polyp, Clavularia sp., makes a striking addition to the reef aquarium with its bright, flowing tentacles They are a staple addition to many reef aquariums. Often noted as a good indicator of water quality and flow, these corals will often react to changes in water parameters by ceasing to open or not opening at all. Care should be taken as to the placement of this coral as if given the right placement in good water, will often grow out of control. Large colonies resemble an almost psychadellic phosphorescent lawn. Coral encrusts rock and dead hard coral skeletons with a waxy fiberous substance from which polyps emerge. When a rock is crowded the colonies often react by sloughing this waxy growth that can be glued to another rock. Tying this substance will also encourage the new colony to attach. Often the tissue left behind on the old rock will eventually sprout an additional colony. Keep pH and alkalinity in balance in order to encourage growth of this flashy coral.
