Anemone Crab,Neopetrolisthes sp., is hardy aquarium addition that attracts attention by its frequent symbiosis with some anemones . An Indo-Pacific and Hawaiian native, it is frequently found hiding in rocks and does make a great cleaner, in the absence of a host anemone. Its white carapace is covered in tiny red, maroon, or brown dots, making it attractive in its own right. A carnivore, it will gladly accept any meaty preparations or frozen foods not discovered by other aquarium inhabitants. It is also thought to eat mucus created by its host anemone. This low, squatty crustacean stays relatively small making it ideal for aquariums of any size, including a mini-reef.
Approximate Arrival Size for Anemone Crab: .5 to 1 in.
Notes: This species must molt in order to grow. Molting generally occurs at night, when the lobster will lay on its back and exit its exoskeleton. A new exoskeleton is excreted and will harden over a period of several hours. The animal is vulnerable at this time and should not be disturbed. Proper iodine levels assist with successful molting.
