Flame Scallop, Lima scabra, is named for the vivid red color of its mantle and, often, tentacles. These sticky tentacles extend from the shell of the scallop and are a dual-fold in function. They act as sweeper tentacles and help the Scallop to capture prey. They also can look menacing, thus deterring potential predators from invading. Also known as the File Shell Clam due to the rasp-like texture of its shell, the Flame Scallop is vulnerable to bristleworms, who can penetrate the shell, then damage or eat the scallop. Fairly hardy overall, invertebrate foods such as Micro-Vert or Marine Snow should be target fed on a regular basis to ensure best health. Medications containing copper must never be used in the presence of scallops (or of most invertebrates.)Fine singularly or in groups, the Flame Scallop will flap its shell to maneuver itself into a corner or against a rock where it is comfortable. It will often work itself into the substrate in order to make its home.
